ABOUT MY THARAVADU MAKKUNIVARAYIL

Makkuni Tharavadu is situated in Azhikode, Kannur dist., 10 km west of Kannur. Dr.Kunhiraman Nambiar was famous and a courageous Military Doctor. And as a medical practitioner he was so generous to public and the treatment was fully free. M.Madhavan Nambiar (mutti valappu), Mrs. Karthyayani Nambiar (w/o Madhavan Nambiar), Karthyayani Nambiar (sister of Madhavan Nambiar), Makkunivarayil Chandukkutty Nambiar, Lakshmikkutty Amma (Arol) are among those who participated in freedom fighting. Makkuni varayil Balakrishnan Nambiar was an INA commander and fought against British kingdom.
Makkuni Tharavadu includes 7 other thavazhies.

Now the Makkuni Tharavadu is governed and managed by a charitable Trust. The chief patron of the trust is Mr. M. Karunakaran Nambiar Advocate Kannur. (Leading and senior most advocate of Kannur Bar). Every year in last Week of April the trust is celebrating Theyyam Maholsavam and almost all members of all thavazhies participate in Utsavam to get the blessing of Theyyam.
DHARMADAIVAM, KANDANARKELAN, GULIKAN(puramkalan), VAYANATTUKULAVAN AND SREE BHAGAVATHI are the tharavattu theyyam. Vayanattukulavan and SreeBhagavathi are the important KOLANGAL.
ANNADANAM IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM DURING THE THEYYAM FESTIVAL. The credit goes to Makkuni Tharavadu Trust
THE IMPORTANCE OF VARAYIL THAVAZHI
Varayil Tharavadu is situated near by Vayiparambu L P. School, Azhikode West. Just one km from Makkuni Tharavadu. The importance of Varayil Tharavadu is the presence of YOGISWARA in the cave (guha) situated in the south side of the varayil Tharavadu. At present no body is staying in Varayil Thavazhies, It is affiliated or given to Makkuni Tharavadu Trust to maintain and manage the property. Makkuni Varayil Balakrishnan Nambiar was a well known cashew exporter and he was known as the cashew King of India. He was the 1st exporter of cashew nuts to Russia from India
MAKKUNI THARAVADU IS MAINTAINING A BIG POND ADJOINING THE THARAVADU AND IT IS CALLED AANJUVAYALKULAM. People from Kannur and Talassery are used to come here for learning swimming.
